Steve Rubel, Senior Marketing Strategist for Edelman a big global PR firm, has been blogging for years. He is seen as responsible for how PR departments are looking at blogs and using blogs differently than in the past. Some people think he is controversial, some people think he is just great.

Controversial because (from Wikipedia):

The firm later came under criticism when one of its clients, Wal-Mart, helped pay for a couple to blog their cross-country RV trip on which they parked at local Wal-Marts. The blog, Wal-Marting Across America, was quite favorable toward Wal-Mart, but the extent of the financial support was not fully disclosed (any RV can park overnight for free at Wal-Mart, but the company also paid for renting the couple’s RV, along with gas and other fees). As the firm’s blogging expert, Rubel was a focus of some of the criticism, but he said he was not personally involved in the project.

Rubel is great because of he advises clients on using blogs in their business strategy and started his own blog, Micro Persuasion, where he blogs on the effect of blogging on the public relations industry. This is why I like Steve Rubel, and read his blog. I think the traditional PR manager is not aware of what an impact a blog can have, and how to react in these. Usually they react in a way that causes more damage.

Steve blogs on Micropersuasion.com.

He describes in the post: When less is more and more is less how he finds himself changing his blogging habits from blogging less short updates multiple times a day, into longer more insightful pieces but less frequent.

This is just one evolution of a blogger. And as a blogger, you only notice this until you read back after a period of time how your habits have changed.

The more you blog, the more you read other blogs, and the more you think how you would like to write, the more you change in style and get better in your own mind.

I guess one measure to see if you truly are getting better in writing, is the number of people following you, and the number of people visiting your blog in a natural/organic way.

There were two guests in the show who hooked up through the site Sugardaddy.com, a site where wealthy men can hook up with women who like to be pampered.

After a few weeks I realized that the search term Sugardaddy was not very competitive. I ranked second in Yahoo for the search term Sugardaddy.com. I have seen quite a lot of traffic coming through the search term.

I thought it was just nice, but I had no chance of monetizing the traffic through the normal Adsense. So I turned back to the site to see if they had an affiliate program. They did, so I signed up for it, and changed all the links on my site to include affiliate tracking. I joined the affiliate program of Sugardaddy.com.

I didn’t think about this anymore… until today. My wife called me up on my cell, saying that a check arrived which they did not understood. It was a check from Sugardaddy.com for paying leads on the site. The check was of the amount of $120,- all generated within two months.

I never thought it would bring me something, but this was a nice surprise. So I say to all sugardaddies out there, keep it coming…

One of my last post was about the more you post, the better it will be for your traffic for your blog. As I’m on a business trip at the moment, this was a couple of days ago. Funny that I write about how frequency can influence your success and then stopped blogging for a couple of days.

But there is a point made! But then I came across the post of Robert Scoble, Scobleizer is one of my favorite blogs. He has a rant on what he thinks of Jacob Nielsen’s piece on write articles not blog postings.

Robert must have written and published the piece pretty pissed off. But then again, I kind a like his way of reacting to all the stuff that is said about himself.

In any case a good moment for me to giving some Link Love to both pieces, although I have not read the Jacob Nielsen piece yet. Way to long for me at this moment…

A number of bloggers argue that a high number of short posts will bring you success in getting more traffic from the search engines. Problogger and tnl.

It makes sense. As whenever you create a new post, you essentially create a new page with a catching title, as long as you put the right keywords in the title which appear in the url!

Now my frequency of posting is already pretty high, but it will take time until your blog has grown in number of posts that make a difference. You need at least a 100 posts to get some skin in the game. The older the blog, the more post you have up there already, especially if you have kept up with the frequency of posting a lot.

A short list of the reasons why short frequent posts are good for your search engine traffic, according to Problogger:

It is highly targeted content

Search engines like shorter posts

Readers like bite sized content

High number of posts equals more entry points to your blog

So post often, post short and reap the rewards…

Google is working hard on the PR story around the posting of the young Ad-sales rep last Friday. Their PR team must be working around the clock, and they seem to know what impact a blog post can have.

Yesterday, Google announced on their official corporate blog that Google shares most of the views of Michael Moore, which have been reported in his film/ documentary Sicko.

In an official post Google explains that they have so much interest for Heathcare and come up with some dates of prior blog posts. Who cares, the rabbit is out of the hat, and they have shown their real faces. y trying to control the public opinion now showing that they care, just shows how much it much be taken with some salt.

BTW, the post on the blog begins with the observation that they are proponents of corporate blogging. I just question that statement. The fact is that Google has less bloggers than say Microsoft.

And the fact that the blog is closed for any comments on the posts, drives the dialogue to other places, off Googles control. Trying to get that discussion under control again, is almost an impossible job. So I call Google to open up the comments on their blogs, to engage directly with their readers in a discussion instead of one way communications.

The tips are pretty good. Most of this has already been covered elsewhere, but this is a pretty good list.

To bad Lauren Turner did not talked with Matt before she expressed her own opinion on a corporate blog. I’ll not discuss the topic, because that has been discussed over and over again here, here and here.

If you read the reactions on the article Michael Arrington has written on Techcrunch, Google Faux Pas Retracted, then you get a good picture of how people think regarding her blog post. BTW, you also get a good picture how some people think about Michael A. from Techcrunch. To bad they attack him personally. There is no need for that!

Tomorrow at 9.45 a.m. the iPhone is starting to be sold in the Apple stores across the United States. There is already a big hype around the introduction of the newest must have Apple gadget. People started to get inline as early as last Tuesday. Homeless or unemployed people hire themselves for a good spot for as little as $250. If you know how much an iPhone will be selling for the first couple of days on eBay, than that’s a good investment.

Robert Scoble, a high profile blogger from half moon bay, is standing in line in front of the store in Palo Alto. Apparently he was the first to arrive there today. So he will be the first tomorrow in Palo Alto to buy one of the iPhones. Together with his son, they are relaxing on the sidewalk, and once in a while he is blogging about who is passing by.

Robert has called for PR teams or CEO’s to come to the Apple store, to pitch new products or concepts. BTW, he also would like to get a coffee from Starbucks

In the mean time, he has already made it to the press. On his blog, the Scobleizer.com you can follow the wait for tomorrow morning. The already made it to the front page of Palo Alto Online.

Great story so far, especially as Robert Scoble is blogging live from the waiting list and mentions everybody who’s stopping by. I should get there and buy the guy a coffee, so he puts in a link to Poetry Magazine!
